Kristin J. Carothers received her MA/Ph.D. in clinical child psychology from DePaul University and her undergraduate degree from Howard University.  Dr. Carothers completed her pre-doctoral internship at Columbia University Medical Center, and post-doctoral fellowship at the St. John's University Child HELP partnership.

Dr. Carothers is devoted to promoting open dialogue and the destigmatization of child and adolescent mental illness, as well as ensuring that all children and families have access to evidence-based care.  In addition to providing psychotherapeutic interventions, Dr. Carothers has extensive experience consulting with school and providing interventions for teachers, students, and parents in school settings.  Dr. Carothers' training and expertise spans a wide variety of evidence-based treatments, including cognitve behavioral therapy (CBT), the Incredible Years parent & child psychosocial intervention, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy(TF-CBT).

Most recently, Dr. Carothers served as a clinician in the ADHD and Behavior Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute in New York City.  There, she further developed expertise in the provision of evidence based treatment for children and parents and gained exposure to Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT).  She also worked extensively with families experiencing high conflict divorces.

Dr. Carothers has extensive experience working with school and provides professional development trainings, consultation, and live coaching to teachers and administrators.  She has presented to private and public school faculty and parents across New York City and New Jersey on topics ranging from effective classroom management techniques to social media usage.

Dr. Carothers serves as media consultant for a number of national print and television media outlets.  She has presented and published research on stress and coping for urban children and adolescents at professional conferences. She is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, American Psychological Association Division 53 Children and Adolescent Psychology and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Services Offered

Dr. Carothers provides evidence based psychotherapy and evaluation to children, adolescents, adults and families.  She specializes in work with children with ADHD and Behavior Disorders and individuals experiencing anxiety as the result of witnessed or experienced trauma.  She provides parent behavior management using the Kazdin Parent Management approach, Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) informed stategies and psychosocial skills groups for parents and children based on the Incredible Years program.  Dr. Carothers also provides school and home base consultation and coaching for families struggling with behavioral problems.

Fees and Insurance

Dr. Carothers works on a fee-for-service basis and is not currently on insurance panels.  She provides a superbill at the time of service that can be attached to an insurance claim form if clients would like to seek insurance reimbursement using their "out of network" insurance benefits.  Many plans cover a substantial portion of therapy, so we encourage you to contact your company in advance to clarify your behavioral health benefits.

Payment is generally expected at the time of service unless otherwise arranged prior to an appointment.  Cash, check, and credit card are accepted.

Please contact the office at 404-352-4348 ext. 101 for more information about fees and to schedule an appointment.
